Loadsa Lira

The Turkish Lira is at a long-time low against the Pound which means that you'll get around 4.4TL to £1. The upshot is cheaper eating, drinking and shopping for British travellers. Some of our favourite bargains include freshly squeezed orange and pomegranate juice from a street stall for the equivalent of £0.70p; lunch (without drinks) in one of the city's smartest restaurants near the Grand Bazaar for £7.50 per person; and a beautiful silk scarf for just £15.

More Hotel Choice Than Ever Before

Istanbul has accommodation to suit every taste and pocket: from prestigious global chains such as Raffles, Four Seasons and W, to design hotels, funky hostels and charm-filled historic 'boutique' hotels. Highly regarded local design group The House Hotel is opening the first of its new budget concept Cloud7 hotels in Atakoy Marina on the Asian side of the city in late December 2015.

Habitat at the Istanbul Modern

No matter how many times you visit the Istanbul Modern, there is always something new to see. The latest temporary exhibition 'Habitat' opens on 23rd December and runs until 22nd May 2016. Habitat examines the evolving concept of space, continuously defined and redefined, through the work of 13 local artists.

Inferno shot in Basilica Cisterns

The final section of Dan Brown's bestselling book takes place in Turkey, and the haunting Istanbul landmark Yerebatan Sarnici (Basilica Cisterns) was closed for several days while filming took place in April 2015. Tom Hank reprises his role as Professor Robert Langdon, and Felicity Jones co-stars. Inferno is expected to hit UK cinemas in October 2016. The cisterns have featured previously in 'From Russia With Love' and 'The International', which starred Clive Owen.

Design Biennial, 22 October to 4 December 2016

Istanbul is gaining repute as one of the leading design cities in Europe, drawing upon its rich cultural heritage and harnessing the talents of one of the youngest populations in Europe. The city's Design Biennial kicks off on 22nd October and is being curated by Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley. ARE WE HUMAN? The Design of the Species :  2 seconds, 2 days, 2 years, 200 years, 200,000 years will explore the intimate relationship between the concepts of design and humanity.
