25 Years Of Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade

Jordan Tourism Board

The 30 June 2014 marks 25 years since the UK release of the cult classic Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade which was directed by Steven Spielberg and co-written by George Lucas.

The popular film portrays Indiana Jones' (Harrison Ford), quest to find his father, a Holy Grail scholar, who has been kidnapped by the Nazis. Indiana's father is played by Sean Connery and the film also stars Alison Doody, Denholm Elliott, Julian Glover, River Phoenix, and John Rhys-Davies.

The fantasy-adventure film was partly shot on location in Petra in August 1988 and the final part of the film features the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) as the temple which houses the Holy Grail for which Indiana Jones has been searching. Arguably one of the most distinct parts of Petra, the Treasury emerges after a beautiful walk through Petra's narrow gorge entrance; the Siq (As Siq). A first century BC tomb of a Nabataean king, the Treasury is carved in to the rose-coloured rock; the façade is 30 metres wide and 43 metres high.

One of the New7Wonders of the World, Petra is a mecca for tourists, historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, geologists, naturalists and architects but this year, film-buffs should plan a visit to the rose-red city to re-tread Indiana Jones' footsteps and mark 25 years of the award-winning film.
