Progress is on target, as planned, to immunise 70% of the island's inhabitants by the end of June.
A total of 171,627 people – 22.3% of the island's population over the age of 16 (considered the target population) - have now been vaccinated in Tenerife against COVID-19, which means they have received at least one dose. Furthermore, of these, 51,990 people are immunised, which means they have received both doses of the vaccine, which accounts for 6.5% of the population of Tenerife over the age of 16. These are the figures provided by the Canary Island Health Service of the Regional Government of the Canary Islands as at 25 April, meaning that the goal of immunising 70% of the island's population by the end of June is on target.
Broken down by age group, and based on the vaccination strategy of the regional government, 71.3% of people in Tenerife over the age of 90 have been vaccinated, and 50.5% of those aged from 80 to 89. These are followed by 5.2% of those aged 70 to 79, 3.4% of those aged 60 to 69, 4.6% of those aged 50 to 59, 4.5% of those aged 40 to 49, 4.3% of those aged 30 to 39 and 3.4% of those aged 20 to 29.
The global figures for the Canary Islands show that 425,245 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine, of which 151,202 are immunised as they have received both doses. This represents 22.73% of the target population in the first case and 8.08% in the second case. The updated figures for Spain as a whole as at 26 April show a similar vaccination trend. 10.7 million people (22.8% of the population) have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 3.9 million (8.3% of the population) have received both doses.
Tenerife, open destination
Tenerife is a destination that remains open, as it has since June last year, as evidenced by the fact that 150,000 tourists holidayed on the island in the first quarter of 2021.
The good figures on the rate of COVID-19, with a lower rate than in the rest of Spain and Europe, have meant that travellers continue to visit the island, and events continue to be organised. This is the case of the Tenerife Open, part of the European Golf Tour, which will host more than 150 golfers from 15 countries, with a potential television audience of 300 million households in 180 countries.
