Guam Visitors Bureau

(Tuesday, June 5, 2007; Tumon, Guam) The Guam Visitors Bureau announced the 20th Guam Micronesia Island Fair is scheduled for the weekend of October 12-14, 2007 at the Governor Joseph Flores Memorial Park, Ypao Beach in Tumon. The Guam Micronesia Island Fair is one of Guams signature annual events, featuring the culture, tradition, and heritage of the Micronesian islands and providing an opportunity for entrepreneurs, manufacturers, traditional artists, cultural performers, and the national tourism offices of each island nation to showcase their wares to visitors and Guam residents alike.

Opening Ceremonies for the 20th GMIF take place on Friday, October 12th and will include a Parade of Nations. Previous GMIF participants have included the Republic of Belau (Palau), Chuuk, Guam, Kiribati, Kosrae, Nauru, the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), the Marshall Islands, and Yap. GVB hopes the 20th GMIF will be the largest event to date and expects an enthusiastic turn out from Guams island neighbors. The Guam Micronesia Island Fair is an exciting spectacle of color, sound, art, dance, and the enticing smell of island cuisine. Most of the exhibition booths have items for sale that represent their islands arts and crafts. The 20th GMIF will also include agricultural produce and livestock exhibits, concession stands, and a petting zoo for the youngsters. As the host island, Guam and her culture will feature prominently throughout the event, with the island villages coming together to participate in displays of coconut husking and grating, tree climbing, spear throwing, crab races, weaving, and outrigger paddling. Guams demonstrations will also include delicious mango smoothies made from the islands abundant fruit crop and how to make and throw a talaya, the Chamorro word for fish net. The 20th Guam Micronesia Island Fair will be joined by another of GVBs signature events, the 2007 Guam Koko Road Race & Ekiden. The race, which welcomes runners from around the world, will take place the morning of Sunday, October 14. The 2nd Annual Guam Koko Road Race & Ekiden has joined the Guam Micronesia Island Fair to create an action packed weekend of fun in October. The list of activities continues to grow as GVB, with the assistance of the event management team of Ruder Integrated Marketing Strategies (RIMS), strives to make the 20th Guam Micronesia Island Fair the biggest and most memorable in its history.
