Tourism Calgary and partners proud to “push play” on the Year of Music

Calgary's vibrant music scene hitting all the right notes

On Jan. 8, Mayor Naheed Nenshi joined Calgary's tourism and music communities to “push play” on the official proclamation of 2016 as the Year of Music in Calgary.

“There are so many amazing music-related events scheduled in 2016 that it became clear we needed take the full year to celebrate,” says Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “This year, Calgarians will experience music in every corner of Calgary.”

The Year of Music is supported by a long list of major anniversaries, the opening of new music-related facilities including the National Music Centre, and the attraction of major events, including the 45th annual JUNO Awards. Numerous local arts, culture and music-related organizations have joined Tourism Calgary to coordinate the overarching theme and pushplaycalgary.com; a new open-source website featuring event and venue listings.

“We are proud of this initiative and the potential it presents for our destination,” says Cindy Ady, CEO Tourism Calgary. “The Year of Music will help to broaden perceptions of Calgary's exciting music and culture scene around the country. We have a lot to be proud of, and are looking forward to sharing our story.”

“The Year of Music is an inspiring way to show Calgarians the opportunities that music can bring to a community," says Andrew Mosker, President and CEO of the National Music Centre. "With the opening of Studio Bell and so many other exciting achievements this year, Calgary has a lot of celebrate. This is not just one year of music, but rather a long-term opportunity to bring us together to champion, nurture and share our music community's voice with Canada and the rest of the world.”

"We have an incredible music scene in Calgary, from independent musicians to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, from amazing festivals to outstanding concerts and sharing all music genres and traditions from all over the world," says Patti Pon, President and CEO of Calgary Arts Development. "The Year of Music is a way to invite Calgarians and visitors alike to join in and attend some highlights in 2016 and continue to take part in the wide variety of events that can be enjoyed year after year."

All Calgarians are encouraged to participate in the Year of Music by attending concerts, sharing information and images of music events on social media and promoting upcoming performances on the open-source site, pushplaycalgary.com. The site features a comprehensive listing database, videos and a copy of the official Year of Music proclamation.
