TIME TO FLAG UP CANADA  AT WORLD TRAVEL MARKET

February 15th, 2015 will mark 50 years since the introduction of the iconic Canadian Maple Leaf Flag.

Thought it was older?  Up until the 1960's Canada had flown the Red Ensign, a banner adapted from the British Union Jack. But as 1967 would mark the nations centenary, it was decided that a newly designed flag was  needed  in the cause of national unity.

A  15 member strong flag committee ultimately decided , from  over 2100 submissions, that the Red and White flag with a single Maple Leaf, would meet the criteria: simplicity, easily recognizable, traditional colours and traditional symbols  and “must serve as a rallying symbol and hence be a unifying force”.  On February 15th, 1965 the then Prime Minster, Lester B. Pearson, gave the inaugural address as the new Canadian Flag was hoisted in Ottawa, at Parliament Hill for the very first time.

To mark the 50 years  of their flag the Canadian Tourism Commission is inviting travel agents to come and flag up their reasons for people to visit Canada in 2015.  Agents will be able to submit their  hand written and drawn entries on especially created  bunting  which will be at the Canada Stand (NA200) Reception desk, manned by the team from the Canadian Tourism Commission.  The top  ten “Flags “as judged by the Canadian Tourism Commission will be  entered into a prize draw to win one of  10 x £50.00 Amazon gift vouchers/T & C apply.

Prizes will be drawn  the week commencing November 10th , 2014 with winners being notified by Email

2016 NORTHWEST PASSAGE EXPEDITION  AUGUST 16 – SEPTEMBER 16TH, 2016

2016? Is that a typing error?  No.  Following in the footsteps of intrepid explorers and rugged expedition vessels, Crystal Serenity becomes the very first luxury ship to ever traverse the Northwest Passage, a mystical  Pacific – Atlantic sea route far beyond the Arctic Circle that for centuries captured the imaginations of kings, queens, explorers and adventurers.

Two years of planning has gone into this carefully curated itinerary, balancing days at sea with scheduled ports of call. Intentionally designed to be flexible, the Captain and his extended team of navigation experts will  incorporate unplanned expedition days when favourable weather conditions allow – think rare wildlife sightings of polar bears, narwhals , musk oxen and caribou or exciting arctic adventures  from Zodiac landings, kayaking in protected bays to trekking on the tundra with a professional guide.  Whilst Crystal Serenity is experienced in operating in some of the world's most extreme locations such as Antarctica and Alaska, an escort vessel will accompany the voyage carrying with it 'adventure equipment' including a platform for wilderness landings, a helicopter and more .

Crystal's Northwest Passage heralds the beginning of a new era of exploration for the cruise line. As an inaugural expedition –style cruise, they've gone to great lengths to ensure the integrity of the experience – authentic discovery and pure adventure, as well as the careful respect  of the remote communities they will be visiting.

So grand is the voyage and rare the adventure they have created a dedicated webpage detailing all that you need to know to prepare for this incredible journey.

THE HOTTEST NEW LIFT IN CANADA WILL ARRIVE AT SUNSHINE VILLAGE FOR 2015/16

In August 2014 Sunshine Village received approval from Parks Canada to construct a new high speed quad chairlift to replace the existing Tee Pee Town double chair  dating back to 1979. The new chair will include heated seats, footrests and orange bubbles for wind and weather protection and will be the first chairlift of its kind in Canada.

“We are thrilled to announce that construction has started on the “hottest chairlift in Canada”, said Dave Riley, Chief Operating Officer for  Sunshine Village. “Sunshine is committed to delivering exceptional guest experiences and this addition to the resort will clearly demonstrate our focus on providing comfort and value to our guests”.

Construction is already underway on towers one through to six as well as the lower terminal foundation and  had to be finished before the winter snows began. The balance of construction will be completed in Spring 2015, over the snow to protect the fragile high alpine vegetation. The Chairlift will be fully operational for the 2015/2016 season.

Construction in Banff National Park  requires extensive environmental analysis and use of the best methods available in order to protect the natural resources. Environmental mitigation techniques include helicopter construction, use of a low impact “Spyder walking excavator”, which is designed to minimize vegetation disturbance, rare plant surveys and protection systems, temporary wildlife mitigation fences and removal and replacement of topsoil and vegetation where excavation for foundations is necessary.

As a unique measure , all excavated soil is being placed in hundreds of tote bags to prevent soil from spilling onto surrounding vegetation. The bags of soil will be flown out by helicopter.

The new lift is supplied by Doppelmayr, an Austrian company, with major components coming from Canada, USA, Germany, Austria and France. The construction crew is located in Kelowna, British Columbia. It will have an uphill capacity of 1,200 people per hour and climb 397 vertical metres over 1,334 horizontal metres.

October 31st is the anticipated opening ski season at Mt. Norquay and November 7th will see Lake Louise Ski Resort and Sunshine Village re – open for 2014/15 winter operations (weather permitting)
