2014: Indy's Biggest Year for Family Travel

Visit Indy

New internationally-focused exhibits make 2014 a marquee year for family travel to Indianapolis:

International Orangutan Center at the Indianapolis Zoo
Coined the “World's Most Important Zoo Exhibit,” the International Orangutan Center which opened in May 2014 showcases eight orangutans that have been saved from the entertainment industry and are now calling Indy their home. Visitors can interact with the orangutans inside the Center as they play computer games, or take a tram up to the “treetops” where orangutans hang in their recreated natural habitat. From here, visitors get a birds-eye view of the zoo and a 360 degree view of the city. The Beacon of Hope, the landmark site of the exhibit which orangutans climb and flip the light on each night, has changed the Indianapolis skyline and serves as an icon for the zoo and the orangutans.

Terra Cotta Warriors at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis
May 2014 was the global premier of the greatest archaeological find of our lifetime at the world's largest Children's Museum. The Shaanxi provincial government assisted The Children's Museum in creating the exhibit and bringing the incredible story to life. Visitors get an in-depth look at China's first emperor and his painted warriors and see the science behind the paint of the warriors – of the 8,000 warriors found, each was painted differently. Visitors also become a part of the archaeology team and learn about new technologies being used to excavate the artifacts and groundbreaking techniques to preserve their paint. In addition to the eight warriors, visitors can also explore 100 other real artifacts from the site.

Indy is also home to several other award-winning family attractions like the Conner Prairie interactive history park, Rhythm Discovery Center, and Dallara IndyCar Factory. To find a complete list of Indy's top family attractions, log onto www.visitindy.com/indianapolis-top-ten-family-fun.
