2 New Museums Open in Vienna This Autumn

Vienna Tourist Board

On October 7, 2017 the Dom Museum Wien next to St. Stephen's Cathedral will open its doors once again with a new concept for visitors after a complete architectural redesign. Remodeled by the Viennese architect Boris Podrecca, the design features an open entrance area leading directly to Stephansplatz and brings together gems from the cathedral collections, avant garde classics from the Otto Mauer collection and contemporary artistic positions in an inspirational dialog.
And on October 25, 2017 the Weltmuseum Wien (formerly the Museum of Ethnology) inside the Neue Burg wing of the Hofburg on Heldenplatz will put its newly organized permanent exhibits back on show. Spread across 14 rooms like pearls on a historical necklace, key pieces are displayed and brought to life from a modern day perspective. The permanent exhibition will be supplemented by five temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists. An open air party on Heldenplatz curated by André Heller will mark the grand reopening.
The Neue Burg (part of the imperial Hofburg palace complex) will also accommodate the House of Austrian History. Scheduled for completion in November 2018, the design for the new museum was commissioned from leading Vienna-based architects BWM.
