Half-term week saw the annual descent of all things ski and snowboard onto London for a week of snow-related conferences and exhibitions. There was a real buzz and much of that was coming from some of the new British skiing and snowboarding stars.
On Wednesday night, the Ski Club of Great Britain held its industry party at the prestigious Hurlingham Club in Fulham and honoured a 17-year-old Snowboarder called Katie Ormerod.
Katie has already reached heights only dreamt of by others - literally! At the tender age of sixteen she has become the first women ever to pull off a double-cork 1080; a trick that was thought to be too physically challenging for women to do.
A 'cork' is a jump where the rider rotates through the air on two different axes: the horizontal axis (spin) and vertical axis (flip) in the same motion as a corkscrew. So a double-cork 1080 describes two full flips and one full spin, which equals 3 x 360s, or 1080 degrees!
Katie from Bradford, fell in love with snowboarding aged 5 and has learnt her skills on the dry slopes and indoor slopes of Halifax before recently joining Team Roxy. She is one of the biggest talents to emerge from Britain's thriving dry slope and indoor scene and she is hot on the footsteps of British riders Aimee Fuller and Jenny Jones.
Katie said: “I am really happy to receive the Evie Pinching award for the most upcoming snowsports athlete! It was such an honour and it really means a great deal. I hope that the successes of British Ski and Snowboard, in particular the GB Park and Pipe Team continues to inspire others to progress and it is great that the award will continue to recognise and support athletes, encouraging a bright future for British snowsports”.
Frank McCusker, CEO of the Ski Club of Great Britain said “We are delighted to present Katie with the Evie Pinching Award, which is a new award from the Ski Club of Great Britain that recognises the rising stars of snowsports. She is a real inspiration for young riders and for this alone she deserves recognition” he added.
Chemmy Alcott, Britain's number one female alpine skier who retired last year, now an Ambassador for the Ski Club, presented the award to Katie in front of 200 guests from the UK ski industry.
