MARCH 2026 | Qunu Restaurant is proud to announce its first-ever star at the 2026 Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards. This milestone marks a significant moment for the team, celebrating their dedication to sustainable, terroir-focused fine dining and highlighting Qunu's growing influence within South Africa's culinary landscape.
The recognition follows a prestigious awards ceremony held on 23 March at the Baxter Theatre Centre in Cape Town, where the country's leading chefs, restaurateurs and industry professionals gathered to honour excellence and innovation.
A MILESTONE FOR QUNU RESTAURANT
Earning its first Eat Out star is a meaningful acknowledgement of Qunu's philosophy and the passionate team behind it, while continuing a legacy of culinary excellence within the Saxon's history. Previous Eat Out-recognised restaurants under the Saxon brand include Five Hundred, Luke Dale Roberts x Saxon and Grei — each contributing to a longstanding culture of innovation and distinction.
Head Chef Scott Dressels shares:“Dining at Qunu is rooted in a deep respect for South African ingredients and the stories they tell. Our approach is thoughtful and intentional, grounded in authenticity. We work closely with growers and producers who share our commitment to responsible sourcing and exceptional quality. Each dish is designed to reflect a true sense of place and purpose. While we focus on clarity of flavour, balance and technique, what matters most is heart. We want every guest to feel connected to the journey of each ingredient and the people behind it. Qunu is a celebration of South African cuisine in its most expressive and honest form.”
George Cohen, Managing Director of Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa, adds: “We are incredibly proud of the Qunu team for earning this recognition. It reflects the dedication and passion that drive our pursuit of exceptional dining experiences.”
This achievement underscores Qunu's ongoing commitment to showcasing South African heritage, responsible sourcing and authentic flavour at the heart of its dining experience.
CELEBRATING CHEF CATHERINE ADONIS
The team is also celebrating the outstanding achievement of Chef Catherine Adonis, who was awarded the Eat Out Callebaut Dessert Award. This accolade recognises her creativity, technical precision and innovative approach to flavour, further elevating Qunu's position on the national stage.
ABOUT THE EAT OUT STAR RATING SYSTEM
The Eat Out star rating system is widely regarded as the leading benchmark for restaurant excellence in South Africa. Over an eight-month period, seven anonymous judges visit restaurants across the country, evaluating each on food quality and technique, service, ambience and overall value.
Restaurants that achieve a score between 70 and 79 are awarded one star, recognising excellence and strong culinary performance. In 2026, just 66 restaurants across South Africa received star ratings, reflecting the depth of talent and growing diversity within the country's fine dining sector.
LOOKING AHEAD
Qunu's first Eat Out star marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. The team remains committed to sustainability, innovation and the honest expression of South African ingredients, continuing to celebrate local stories and flavours while pushing the boundaries of contemporary fine dining.
The restaurant extends its sincere thanks to its loyal guests, dedicated team and valued local suppliers for their continued support.
