10) Congo River in the footsteps of Stanley
Departure: 4th September 2016

Almost two weeks of the trip are on board a on a river boat, traveling the river made infamous in Joseph Conrad's “Heart of Darkness” and covering roughly 1,700 kilometers of one of Africa's most powerful and impressive rivers. Camping along the mighty Congo and traveling by and living on an African riverboat participants will be able to visit the remote Bonobo Ape Project and observe Kisangani fisherman earn their living in the same way they've been doing for generations. The river is a perfect mirror of life in the Congo; and though it's constantly changing, this untouched landscape has probably changed very little since Stanley's journey here over 140 years ago. Each night will be spent camping on the banks of the river and meeting local communities that depend on the river for survival. This is a country with a complicated history but visitors quickly discover that the character of its people is what keeps it moving forward. This is both a cultural and historic voyage through some of the least explored areas of Central Africa.
