Canal & River Trust

Have some great family fun by the waterways this summer by joining the Canal & River Trust's free family events in August. Rich in history, with colourful canal boats and wonderful watery wildlife there's over 2,000 miles of canals and rivers throughout the country to explore.

Rediscover your inner wild child, enjoy a boat trip, try a fishing taster course, take a closer look at the amazing feats of canal engineering, discover what working on a canal was like 200 years ago or join a floating music festival.

Family Fishing Day  

Celebrate National Fishing Month with the Canal & River Trust's free fishing taster session. Fishing is fun and we can prove it. All sessions take place with the help of a licensed fishing coach. Register in advance and receive your free fishing starter kit on the day. The starter kit includes a short pole, 2 rigs which have line, a float, a hook, weights and a disgorger for unhooking the fish.

Tees Barrage Open Day

A family day out to visit the four massive floodgates that control the mighty Tees. Admire this great engineering feat from the viewing platform or control room and get close to the lock as it undergoes essential maintenance. Look out for the fish ladder that allows migrating fish such as salmon to navigate the barrage. Sample a new water sport such as windsurfing, sailing, rowing canoeing or white-water rafting.

Long Eaton Canal Festival

Historic boats, boat trips, local crafts, canoe and fishing taster sessions, traditional children's rides, for family fun on or beside the water.

Blisworth Canal Festival

Enjoy some fantastic watery festivities at Blisworth this year. Join a boat tour through Blisworth Tunnel and enjoy a free fishing taster session. For your four-legged friends there's a companion dog show, scurry, agility show and gun dog training demonstrations. Other entertainment includes vintage caravans, tractors, children's fairground, refreshments and stalls.

Over & Under Tunnel Adventure

Walk and sail in the footsteps of the original tunnel controller. Travel by boat through Britain's longest tunnel, discover the stories of the navvies who built it, and walk back along the original packhorse route. Booking essential.

Go Fish at Banbury

The Brighouse Canal, Beer & Music Festival cruises into town providing two full days of free boat trips, canal crafts, a street market, miniature steam train rides, vintage vehicles, music on two stages and refreshments.
