Welcome to “TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week," where we highlight an active journalist or editor within the TravMedia community. We have so many amazingly talented, successful and inspirational professionals in our midst — let's meet Alexis Buxton-Collins.

Q. Where are you based?

When I'm not on the road, I call Adelaide home.

Q. What outlet do you write for? Who is your audience? What are your travel specialties?

I write for a range of publications - Qantas, Escape, Explore, Traveller and The Guardian among them, and while I cover plenty of bases, the stories that really get me excited generally take me beyond travel hotspots and deep into nature, whether that means enjoying the sunrise from a Mayan pyramid deep in the Central American rainforest, setting up a desert camp with a group of bedouins and their camels or getting up close and personal with mantas rays on a scuba dive.

Q. What is a professional pet peeve?

Opaque pay rates (and publications that don't pay a living wage). This is an immensely rewarding industry, but it's also a challenging way to make a living and we deserve to be fairly compensated for our time and the skills we've developed over many years.

Q. In your past professional life, you were …

My one and only 9-5(ish) job was editing a music magazine in my twenties. Since then, I've set up and run music festivals, tended bar at my favourite pub and tried my hand at a dozen other jobs, but I always end up coming back to writing.

Q. Where would you like to return to?

I was travelling through Syria when the civil war began and though many of the friends I made no longer live there, the unstinting friendliness of the locals and embarrassment of historic sites from different eras have kept it close to my heart ever since.

Q. What's on your bucket list?

I would love to visit the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica once in my life.

Q. Where do you travel for fun?

The location matters less than the style; no itinerary, no luxury and no expectations, just the joy of discovery.

Q. Your funniest (or most harrowing) travel story is …

Hitchhiking across four continents has brought plenty of good stories (and more than a few dicey moments), but missing the last boat home from an island bar in Panama and having to tow a non-swimmer back to the mainland on a moonless night was an entirely self-inflicted mishap. Unsurprisingly, we were back the next day.

Q. What advice would you give your younger professional self?

Not everything needs to be content - save some things for yourself to help keep the passion alive

Q. What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on?

Being in Adelaide means that I don't often see the rest of the travel community outside of IMM (shoutout to TravMedia for putting on such a fabulous event), but I'm always happy to ditch work and grab lunch or a glass of wine if you find yourself in South Australia.

Q. How best should people contact you?

Email works - alexisabroad@gmail.com.au - or you can always contact me through my website, alexisabroad.com.au
