Where are you based?
Manhattan.
What topics and places do you cover?
I most enjoy writing about arts and culture, but I suppose I'm a generalist. I've written about family travel, food, wine, hotels, fashion, adventure, etc. For me, the best way to see a destination is through its people, so I love interviewing as many locals as possible: artists, makers, chefs, farmers, designers, shopkeepers, and so on.
What outlets do you usually pitch (and write for)?
I write a fair amount for Afar, and I regularly contribute to Chase Travel and Business Traveler. I've also recently written for Playboy, Travel + Leisure, and Thrillist.
Are you in-house or freelance (or both)?
Freelance! I spent seven years as the editor in chief of Hemispheres, United's inflight magazine. Since it folded in 2024, I've mainly been freelance editing—for Afar, Playboy, Thrillist, etc. This year, I really want to expand my writing portfolio, and I particularly want to write more long-form stories.
What is your approach to press trips?
I'm open to press trips, but I rarely take them, and I prefer individual trips. The idea of traveling without an assignment is incredibly stressful to me. I'm still getting the hang of being a freelancer!
What are your professional pet peeves?
I don't like when PR people sit in on interviews. To me, that's an intimate moment, and I want the subject to feel comfortable talking with me; having someone else there (either on the phone or in person) is disruptive and changes the whole vibe.
In your past professional life, you were …
An entertainment editor and writer. I worked at Spin, Rolling Stone, and Nylon. I got into travel kind of accidentally when I was hired to be the editor of Rhapsody, United's magazine for first class; it had celebrity covers, and I had tons of experience booking talent. I've interviewed countless celebrities over the years—Daniel Radcliffe, Lady Gaga, Ethan Hawke, Questlove, Andrew Garfield, David Oyelowo, Common, Helen Mirren…
Where would you like to return to?
Italy, Scotland, England, Ireland, Greece, Hawaii, Mexico City…
What's on your bucket list?
Everywhere I haven't been! But right now: Japan, Egypt, Alaska, the Azores, Malta, Andalusia, the Galapagos, Istanbul…
Where do you travel for fun?
For the last five years, my family has visited National Parks over spring break, and that's been a blast. So far, we've done the Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree, Yellowstone, Zion/Bryce/Arches (via RV!), and Shenandoah. Though he was raised in NYC, my 13-year-old son fancies himself an outdoorsman and insists we “be in nature” as much as possible. (A common complaint from him: “I didn't choose to live in this concrete prison!”) We also go to Western Maine every summer for a couple of weeks—the perfect reset.
What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on?
Not a nugget, but an apology: I'm sorry I don't respond to every email or invite! I try! I just get too many.
