✨ Welcome to our series, TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week! ✨
Each week, we'll be shining a spotlight on one of the incredibly talented, passionate, and inspiring Journalists or Editors from our amazing community.
This week, we'd like to shine the spotlight on freelance travel writer - Sinead Kennedy.
We hope you enjoy - happy reading !!
Where are you based?
Dublin - when not travelling somewhere amazing
What outlets do you write for?
I am freelance but most of my articles have been published by the Irish Independent. I also wrote a book re travelling and cycling all over the world - spending quality time alone.
Who is your audience?
Those of us who are in the golden triangle- age 50- 70 who have HEALTH - time and money.
What are your travel specialties?
Adventures, wellness and active holiday - solo or otherwise.
Are you in-house or freelance (or both)?
Free
What are your professional pet peeves?
That the solo economy is very much overlooked - I run wellness activity holidays - widows are drawn to me as they want adventure - to live but also to go with others. I think both media and travel need to get more onboard that our lifestyles are changing…..
In your past professional life you were …
My career started in hospitality - I managed bars / nightclubs .. then I became a fitness instructor and worked on the cruise ships… then I went to India became a yoga teacher… came to Ireland and added on Pilates …. THEN I combined my love of travel, fitness and even management to curate wellness activity holidays and started to write my own travels which have always been wild and wonderful. So nothing is past … I was just building the foundations!
Where would you like to return to?
I am thrilled to be returning to Antartica on Feb 2026… twice in a lifetime will be the headline for my articles!
What's on your bucket list?
I have been to 80 countries and 7 continents… I would love to visit Moscow and St Petersburg… maybe in 20 years time we can travel there before it's too late for me ….
Where do you travel for fun?
Anywhere I can!! As a solo traveller I am happy to go anywhere / anytime - I tend NOT to return to places but Antartica will be a very special exception
Your funniest (or most harrowing) travel story is …
There are so many! I cycled the longest climb in the world in Colombia with severe food poisoning.. if that wasn't bad enough my guide left me as he has some mates cycling with him and they were racing each other … I was just happy to arrive alive…. (8 hours - 80 kilometers)
What advice would you give your younger professional self?
To get out of catering / hospitality sooner bit I am glad I worked initially as It gave me the organisational and planning acumen I need …
What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on?
To stop being competitive with others. There is space and time for everyone. You don't need to be a bully or outdo others. Let your work and charisma do the talking
How best should people contact you?
Via email
