TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week | Kate Gazzard, Editor at get lost Magazine
29 Jul 2025Lauren Moelk

Q. Where are you based? Melbourne, Australia

Q. What outlet do you write for? Who is your audience? What are your travel specialties? I'm the Editor at get lost Magazine, responsible for its overall content and direction. The magazine is geared towards curious, adventurous, and experience-hungry travellers who crave more than the usual tourist traps and specialises in everything from undiscovered and emerging destinations to cultural immersion and unique accommodation.

Q. What are your professional pet peeves? Submission deadlines aren't guidelines!!! Nothing makes me more frustrated than work that comes in late.

Q. In your past professional life, you were … I began my working career as a social media guru and writer of recipes for an Australian kitchenware retailer.

Q. Where would you like to return to? France! I've been to Paris five times, but somehow, I've never made it further than Versailles, so a trip to the south of France is definitely on the cards in the near future.

Q. What's on your bucket list? Seeing the Northern Lights! I'm not picky about the country, but I need to see those shimmering beauties at least once in my lifetime.

Q. Where do you travel for fun? I'm a sucker for a South Pacific Island!

Q. Your funniest (or most harrowing) travel story is … Pulling an all-nighter in New Orleans before an early morning flight to the Bahamas; I was severely hungover, disgustingly tired and spewing my guts up from a bad chicken nugget I drunkenly slurped down at 4 am that morning (yes, slurped. The chicken nugget's insides were liquid, hence the food poisoning).

Q. What advice would you give your younger professional self? Don't let anxiety hold you back, you got this.

Q. What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on? A compelling story can happen anywhere from a forgotten village in the Himalayas to an unexpected five-hour layover in Nairobi. What matters is how it's told. Always chase narrative, not just location/experience.

Q. How best should people contact you? I'm always available via email!
