TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week: A Q&A with Dana Rebmann
24 Jul 2025Kim Grant

Where are you based?

Sonoma County Wine Country, California.

What topics and places do you cover?

I started my journalism career in broadcast news with CBS and NBC. Feature work was limited, so now I focus on stories that hopefully make people smile – travel, food and wine, and hotels. I'm drawn to outdoor adventure, especially when it's in and around (preferably warm) water with snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. I love respectfully watching and photographing animals, especially marine life.

What outlets do you usually pitch (and write for)?

I contribute to 30-plus publications including AARP, Condé Nast Traveler, The (London) Telegraph, Ultimate Experiences, Garden & Gun, and Afar. I'm a big fan of telling stories for quality regional publications including Nob Hill Gazette, Diablo Magazine, and Sonoma Magazine, all based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm also a travel correspondent for San Francisco television station KRON4; I shoot and edit the video for all of my segments.

Are you in-house or freelance (or both)?

Freelance

What is your approach to press trips?

I prefer individual trips, but I'm open to smaller group press trips that allow for some free time to keep up with assignments and emails, as well as chase something that might not be on the itinerary.

What are your professional pet peeves?

Asks for confirmed assignments, in particular confirmed assignments from publications that historically do not guarantee coverage prior to travel or accept coverage from press trips. Please be upfront in situations like this; it saves so much time for all involved.

Where would you like to return to?

There too many spots to list, but I'd be thrilled to spend more time in Australia, the Galápagos Islands, and French Polynesia. I'd especially love to spend time on Moorea during whale season.

What's on your bucket list?

So many places. The Maldives tops the list, but Norway, Croatia, Tonga, Tofino, Greenland, and the Azores aren't far behind. I have a thing for islands and water.

Where do you travel for fun?

I always set aside time for a summer visit to the Jersey Shore; I was raised on Long Beach Island –– L.B.I. for those in the know.

What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on?

It's a long game; relationships (between those in the hospitality industry and the media) are crucial. Credible players in both spheres have good reputations for a reason.

How best should people contact you?

Find my email address on my TravMedia profile. You can follow me on Instagram @danarebmann to get a good sense of what I enjoy and write about, but direct messages on social media often get buried or forgotten.
