TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week: A Q&A with Josh Rivera
29 May 2025Kim Grant

Where are you based?

Washington, DC, area.

What topics and places do you cover?

Air travel, cruises, theme parks, national parks, and international travel – all from a consumer focus. When it comes to international destinations, we're looking at American travel trends, ease of access, and value proposition. When it comes to domestic destinations, we're looking for unique or niche experiences around the country or a surprising twist to a known destination.

Are you in-house or freelance (or both)?

In-house.

What is your approach to press trips?

Will review on a case-by-case basis.

What are your professional pet peeves?

Quick follow-ups to non-breaking news.

Pitches via social media or any other platform that isn't my work email.

Multiple emails or documents of logistics for one trip.

In your past professional life, you were …

I started my career as a PR executive.

Where would you like to return to?

Probably anywhere in Australia.

What's on your bucket list?

South Korea, New Zealand, Scotland, Morocco, and Kazakhstan.

Where do you travel for fun?

Mostly domestically to visit family.

Your funniest (or most harrowing) travel story is …

While riding an ATV, during one of the bumps of the track, a rusty metal tube slammed directly into my knee, leaving me incapacitated for the rest of the trip.

What advice would you give your younger professional self?

It's all made-up stress. No one's dying at the operating table if you miss a deadline.

What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on?

A pass on one pitch isn't a permanent no. Sometimes, timing, internal resources, or other factors come into play. So, keep pitching.
