TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week: A Q&A with Alison Fox
07 May 2025Kim Grant

Where are you based?

I live in Brooklyn, NY.

What topics and places do you cover?

My background is in news so while I cover all things travel, I'm usually looking for a news hook or timely angle. I cover everything from cruises and hotel openings to new flights, skiing, and more.

What outlets do you usually pitch (and write for)?

Over the years, my work has appeared in The Points Guy, Ski Magazine, Travel Weekly, Travel + Leisure, and more, and I sometimes do social media takeovers for Travel + Leisure as well.

Are you in-house or freelance (or both)?

Freelance

What is your approach to press trips?

I go on a range of individual and group press trips, but for me to say yes, the trip has to have a compelling news hook I think I can place. It's also nearly impossible for me to confirm coverage ahead of time and coverage may not always be immediate, which is why accepting press trips can often feel stressful. I'm always pitching multiple angles and I've had stories come up even years later, but I tend to be selective with trips for that reason.

What are your professional pet peeves?

It's a big red flag when I'm given a specific list of publications to pitch for a press trip and often an immediate reason for me to pass on one. I understand every client wants placement in certain publications, but I'm freelance, not paid marketing, and it doesn't always work like that.

Where would you like to return to?

It feels like you can never visit Paris, London, or Milan too many times, and I would love to see more of Antarctica (especially the chance to see emperor penguins).

What's on your bucket list?

My goal is to see every country in the world but certain experiences top the list like seeing polar bears in Greenland, swimming with whale sharks off the coast of Western Australia, and swimming in the Nile in Egypt.

Where do you travel for fun?

I usually spend weekends on the Jersey Shore in the summer or skiing in upstate New York with my family in the winter. I think any trip where I can share it with friends or family no matter where is fun. My family also tries to plan a yearly trip over the December holiday break — this year we're thinking of London!

Your funniest (or most harrowing) travel story is …

Following a rickshaw driver into an alley and through the back of a tailor shop with my sister in Udaipur in search of an amazing shop I'd read about. It maybe wasn't the smartest move, but the shop was just as amazing as advertised and worth it in the end. It was multiple rooms of colorful scarves, bags, tablecloths, and more stacked high to the ceiling. And we ended up sitting in the courtyard and talking politics with the owners after. One of those altogether perfect travel experiences.

What advice would you give your younger professional self?

I think a news background is a good foundation for any journalist, so I would have told her to keep it up. Then I would have said to cultivate relationships early and often because you never know where your next opportunity is going to come from.
