TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week: A Q&A with Chloe Berge
30 Apr 2025Kim Grant

Where are you based?
Vancouver, British Columbia

What topics and places do you cover?
I love stories that lie at the intersection of travel, environment, and culture and my favourite assignments weave these three together through outdoor adventure. Untold histories, innovative approaches to conservation and sustainability, and contemplative journeys that challenge me and change my perspective are elements I look for. I gravitate toward wild, remote places, particularly in my home country of Canada, but a great story ultimately dictates where I go.

What you don't write about.
I'm curious about most things, so there's nothing off-limits for me but as a rule, I don't write often about food and drink or ultra-luxury travel, unless there's a compelling sustainability angle tied in.

What outlets do you usually pitch (and write for)?
I write for mostly U.S. and Canadian outlets, including AFAR, Travel + Leisure, National Geographic, Vogue, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, and others.

The best PR pitches include...
It's always appreciated when it's clear that they're familiar with my work and have taken the time to identify a strong story angle that would be a fit. It's refreshing when a pitch offers a deeper, thoughtful idea, and a news peg or “why now” element up front goes a long way too.

Are you in-house or freelance (or both)?
Freelance

What is your approach to press trips?
I do take press trips but I'm drawn to independent media trips because they give me the most freedom to shape the trip, build the narrative that I want to tell, and dive below the surface of a place.

In your past professional life, you were…
My undergraduate degree was in art history, so I did a brief stint in gallery work before pursuing a master's in journalism and transitioning into writing professionally. Whenever I'm in a gallery or museum I can imagine a parallel life in that world.

Where would you like to return to?
So many places! I'd go back to Greenland in a heartbeat, and it's been a decade since I was in Japan. I hiked the Kumano Kodo Trail the last time I was there, and I've had my eye on a backcountry trail in Hokkaido.

What's on your bucket list?
I'd love to visit Bhutan and I haven't made it to Egypt yet either. Also, anywhere in the Arctic. Stories brought me to East Greenland and Svalbard last year and ignited an obsession with that part of the world. Nunavut is the only province or territory in Canada I've yet to travel to so that's up there.

Where do you travel for fun?
Tofino on Vancouver Island is my Shangri-La. I've been going there since I was a kid and there's no place more restorative or relaxing, especially in the winter.

Your funniest (or most harrowing) travel story is …
I was charged by a mountain gorilla in Rwanda. That got my heart thumping.
