TravMedia's Travel Writer of the Week: A Q&A with Amanda Ward
09 Apr 2025Kim Grant

Where are you based?

I live in Austin, Texas.

What topics and places do you cover?

I love cruise, luxury, family, and adventure travel, as well as wellness, art, food, and design.

What you don't write about.

I don't drink alcohol, but I'm always up for a mocktail and love writing about non-alcoholic options.

What outlets do you usually pitch (and write for)?

Travel+Leisure, Texas Monthly, Afar, Bon Appetit, Texas luxury publications, Matador, Fodor's, CruiseCritic, Hotels Above Par, and Travel Weekly.

The best PR pitches include ...

an invitation to experience an incredible property or destination that I can create a story about.

Are you in-house or freelance (or both)?

I am a New York Times bestselling novelist and freelance travel writer.

What is your approach to press trips?

I love press trips. Sometimes, I'll go on my own or with my family, but I also enjoy a great group trip and have met many of my favorite people on press trips.

In your past professional life, you were …

I am still a novelist; I write best on airplanes and cruise ships! My novel, The Jetsetters, is set on a Mediterranean cruise and was a Reese Book Club pick. My new novel (out in the summer of 2026) is set in Athens and the Greek islands.

Where would you like to return to?

Italy, Greece, Japan, South Africa, Kenya, Belize, Costa Rica, Mexico, Hawaii, and — always — the city where I was born: New York!

What's on your bucket list?

I would love to go to New Zealand and more Asian countries — I've never been to Thailand or China. I love Europe and Canada. I love small, luxury ships and expedition cruising.

Where do you travel for fun?

My home, Austin, is my favorite city. We also visit family in Ouray, Colorado.

Your funniest (or most harrowing) travel story is …

I was visiting the Plaza in New York with my daughter because she loves the Eloise books. She was very small, and we were wandering the hallways to “be like Eloise.” In one of the ballrooms, I got on an elevator and the doors closed before my daughter made it into the elevator car, which started moving. I freaked out...but when I returned to the ballroom, she was relaxed and laughing, saying she had been lost in the Plaza just like Eloise.

What advice would you give your younger professional self?

Get sober, figure out what you love, and let go of what anyone else thinks you should accomplish.

What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on?

I can't get over how welcoming and brilliant the travel writing and PR community can be. I feel very lucky to be a part of it.
