Q. What outlet do you write for? Who is your audience? What are your travel specialties? I've worked in our family business Signature Media for a decade and contributed across all of our titles. Since becoming a mum, I have delved deep into the world of family travel and I love creating inspiring, educational and most importantly, practical information for new parents, in print, online and social video format.
I'm excited to take on a new role as Assistant Editor of Holidays with Kids, supporting and learning from our long-time and much-valued editor, Aleney de Winter.
Q. What are your professional pet peeves? Negativity and snobbishness. We're so lucky to work in an industry filled with kind, supportive and caring people who can champion one another, so it is a rare, but jarring occurrence.
Q. In your past professional life, you were … Working in hospitality and events. My first professional job was as a sales coordinator at the Sheraton Grand Sydney after I graduated from university. It's given me an extra appreciation whenever I stay in a hotel as I know how much work goes into ensuring everything flows smoothly for the guest.
Q. Where would you like to return to? Japan. To share the culture with our daughter and hit up the ski resorts, of course!
Q. What's on your bucket list? For a solo sojourn, I'm dreaming of a guided horse riding adventure, cantering on beaches, meandering through tropical rainforests and spending time with like-minded equine lovers.
Q. Where do you travel for fun? Anywhere with good margaritas and something adventurous to do.
Q. Your funniest (or most harrowing) travel story is … My sister and I were backpacking around Southeast Asia in 2012. She'd arrived earlier than me and we met up in Thailand. After a few weeks in the 'Land of Smiles', we took an overnight bus to Laos. I was woken up from my very safe sleeping position on the floor above the engine, as we had to get off the bus to go through immigration. In my sleep-deprived state, I got back on and zoned out. A few minutes later and in a new country I realised my sister wasn't on the bus. I went into a frenzy, worried that she'd been kidnapped, detained, or arrested. Turns out she just had to pay a fine for overstaying her visa and got on another bus and met up with us later. I can laugh about it now, but to this day I am the group passport holder and make sure everyone I'm travelling with is accounted for at all times.
Q. What advice would you give your younger professional self? To care less about what others think! I carried a bear on my back for years feeling like I had to justify that I deserved to be where I was. Yes, I work in a family business and my mum is my boss, but I work damn hard too.
Q. What nugget would you like to add that we haven't touched on? I'm looking forward to working more closely with PRs and hospitality operators in my new role.
